Why a blowout matters here
Spokane winters don’t negotiate.
Water left sitting in irrigation lines expands when it freezes. That expansion is what cracks backflow assemblies, splits lateral lines, and ruins valve manifolds — and none of it shows up until you turn the system on in spring and find a geyser in the front yard.
Draining a system by gravity isn’t enough in this climate. Most residential lines don’t sit at a perfect slope, so water pools in the low spots no matter how well the system was installed. Compressed air is the only reliable way to clear them.
Here’s the math that matters. A blowout is $85. Replacing a freeze-cracked backflow preventer runs $450 to $1,700 — and it almost always means full replacement, because once the brass housing cracks it can’t be patched. A split line runs $125 to $400 per break, and freezes rarely stop at one.
Eighty-five dollars in October, or several hundred to a couple thousand in April. That’s the whole decision.

When to schedule in Spokane
Spokane usually sees its first hard freeze in early to mid-October, though it moves around by a couple of weeks each year.
We run blowouts from late September through October. Book toward the front of that window if you can — the last two weeks before a freeze are when everyone calls at once, and that’s when scheduling gets tight for everyone in town.
